Jacó: Something for Everyone

As a Costa Rican tour guide (and a local who’s seen the country change over the years), I often get asked about Jacó — and I always say the same thing: don’t let its old reputation fool you!
Yes, it’s true Jacó was once mostly known for loud bachelor parties and a bit of a wild nightlife. And sure, during the high season the traffic can test anyone’s patience. But today, Jacó is so much more — and for many visitors, it’s the perfect stop for a night or two at the beginning or end of your trip, just 1.5–2 hours from SJO airport.
For families, Jacó offers a long sandy beach where kids can safely learn to surf or paddleboard, even take horseback rides right on the sand. There’s plenty of family-friendly fun nearby too: e-bike rentals, ATV tours, hiking trails, and the beautiful Carara National Park, known for its scarlet macaws. When you’re done exploring, Jacó has restaurants to fit every taste and budget, plus souvenir shops to pick up gifts before flying home. And if you have an early morning flight, staying in Jacó can save you a boring night at an airport hotel — it’s an easy shuttle to SJO in the morning.
For younger travelers and groups of friends, Jacó is just as appealing: beach bars, local craft beer spots, good wine selections, and a late-night scene if you’re in the mood. The same outdoor activities that families love — surfing, hiking, rafting — are also perfect for 20- and 30-somethings looking for a bit of adventure.
And let’s not forget sport fishing fans: world-famous Los Sueños Marina is only 15 minutes away, with some of the best offshore fishing for sailfish, marlin, and tuna. For surfers, Playa Hermosa (just south of town) is legendary for its consistent breaks and laid-back vibe.
As a local, I also love Jacó’s side streets: great coffee shops, fresh fruit markets (fruterías), seafood shops, and even specialty liquor stores with a solid wine selection — everything you need to stock your Airbnb or beach condo.
So despite its reputation from years past, I truly believe Jacó has something for everyone: families, friends, solo travelers, surfers, and even foodies. Next time you’re in Costa Rica, don’t drive past — stop and see for yourself!
If you’d like, I’d be happy to show you around, help plan your stay, or join your group to share what makes Jacó special.
