As a Costa Rican who is deeply proud of my country — especially our incredible diversity in geography, habitats, and biodiversity — I love to share truly authentic local experiences with my guests while we travel together.

When most people think of Costa Rica, the first things that probably come to mind are our beautiful beaches. Next might be our world‑famous coffee or maybe even bananas, since they’re such an important export. But Costa Rica produces so many other wonderful things too: rich artisanal chocolate from small family farms, high‑quality clothing made by local designers, award‑winning craft beers like Treinta y Cinco and Costa Rica’s Craft Brewing Co., and even handmade guitars and leather goods known only to locals.

One of my personal favorite places to bring guests when we’re in Jacó is Carton Surfboards. Not just because it’s internationally respected for the craftsmanship and quality of each board, but because the owner, Carlos “Carton” Valenciano, is genuinely one of the nicest people you’ll meet. He always takes time to welcome visitors, show them how surfboards are made, and share his passion for the craft.

Of course, it’s a special treat for surfers — but even my guests who have never touched a surfboard are fascinated. After all, what non‑surfing tourist would ever think to step into a surf shop, let alone realize they’re walking into the workshop of an internationally known shaper whose boards ride waves all over the world? And honestly, I think I’ve helped sell more Carton Surfboards t‑shirts than anyone else in Costa Rica — because once people hear the story, they want to bring a piece of it home!
